General Safety, Welding
1- Never look at or cause another person to
look at a weld being performed unless the proper safety equipment is protecting
everyone’s eyes.

Number 5 lens for oxy-fuel welding and cutting.
·
Number 8 lens for plasma arc cutting.
·
Number 10 to 12 for GMAW, SMAW and GTAW.
·
Number 15 for the sun.
·
Use the welding curtains
2- Safety glasses must be worn in the shop at
all times!
3- When operating any piece of
machinery—
·
No loose fitting clothing, jewelry, or hair; tie it back or remove it.
·
Only one person is
allowed to operate any one machine at a time.
·
Keep your hands well clear of cutting blades.
·
Clamp the work-piece when cutting or drilling it.
·
Never leave a machine that is running unattended.
·
Consult the teacher before cutting metal different than hot or
cold-rolled steel.
4- Cutting Fluid.
We use a
water-based cutting fluid which can cause itching if it comes in contact with
your skin, so wash it off ASAP if it does come in contact with your skin; in
addition, wipe it off of your work-piece with paper towel.
5- The bench drill press.
Use
cutting fluid when drilling into metal.
Correctly
adjust the drill speed (consult teacher before using).
Correctly
adjust the feed speed (consult teacher before using).
6- The hand grinder.
Never
grind toward another person or a flammable object.
7- The bench grinder.
Keep
your hands well clear of grinding wheels.
Use
vise-grips to hold objects that are smaller than 4".
Never
grind an object unless the table is 1/16” away from the grindstone.
8- The manual and hydraulic metal shear and iron worker.
Clamp
the work-piece to be cut.
Do not exceed the cutting
capacity of the machines.
9- The cold cut saw.
Always clamp the metal tightly.
Never cut a piece of round hollow
tubing on an angle other than 90 degrees without instructor permission.
Make sure the cutting fluid is
flowing properly onto the saw-blade and work-piece.
Cut
on high speed only unless advised otherwise by the instructor.
10- No sandals or shorts in the shop area.
